  1. I don't know that this device will be practical for the energy animal, as it's currently designed. The videos depict components that must be anchored or stationary in order for it to work, and the energy animal is free floating in open water.

Perhaps we could use a device with a stable underwater platform using counter-balanced buoyancy so it floats at a given depth below the surface. The water below the turbulent surface is relatively calm and would offer a near stationary working environment for electrical / mechanical mechanisms. The driving component will need to be on the surface and perhaps connected to the generator below using cables. As the waves rise and fall, the cable is pulled and relaxed. A simple mechanism similar to the rear wheel of a 10-speed bike would allow the driven axle to rotate in one direction when the cable is pulled up by the rising wave, and continue to rotate using flywheel momentum while the cable is relaxed between waves. The floating portion could be the platform holding the wind turbine and solar cells. To keep the underwater platform level, it would have a large round, somewhat shallow shape that provides significant resistance to vertical movement. It would have counterweights using dangling weighted arms like a tightrope walker uses for stability. The ends of the arms may be able to be fitted with some other mechanism to generate electro mechanical energy, like piezoelectric cells so as it flexes, it sends more energy to storage batteries.

Another possibility may be using a floating sheet of piezoelectric cells covering a large area on the water surface. As the waves flex the sheet and the cells, energy is produced and sent to the batteries. The sheet might have solar energy collectors as well so it's multifunctional. There have been many advances in the solar collecting industry recently. Some involve paints that have microscopic solar cells. Another I saw uses microscopic strands of solar cells surrounded by reflecting fibers that has an efficiency during laboratory tests of over 90%. That's way beyond the typical cell efficiency in use now. Food for thought.

  2. About your first remark : yes, I've been thinking about this as well :
"Submarine" (where the batteries are) + buoys on surface :

And I thought we can use both going up and going down movement by using double free-wheel + counter weight at the bottom :

So we may collect 2 times more energy and have less mechanical parts exposed to water and salinity, also a more "passive" system, and bottom weight would just add to inertia.

About piezzo-electric I think they are usually quite expensive parts.
I thoughts about pendulum on articulated surfaces could have a better potential and would self-regulate. :

Do you know cheap large piezzo electric, I m curious...
